Safety & Security

Student safety is Tulane's first priorty. The security and emergency preparedness systems that Tulane utilizes are at the leading edge in the field.

The safety of our students is of paramount concern to all of us at Tulane. Our campus, in the Uptown neighborhood of New Orleans, is one of the safest parts of the city. The crime statistics on and around Tulane's campus are comparable, if not more favorable, to those at other urban universities, but we still take an active role to protect our students and educate them about safety.

The Tulane Department of Public Safety patrols Tulane's campus as well as the neighborhoods contiguous to campus. This group is separate from, but operates in cooperation with, the New Orleans Police Department. The staff includes 44 full-time commissioned police officers, who are trained at state-certified police academies and meet the requirements of the Louisiana Peace Officer Standards of Training. The staff also includes 15 support staff members and more than 40 part-time student employees, who receive special training in campus law-enforcement.

Public Safety patrols campus 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Our 33 blue-lit emergency phones installed across the network of campus pathways immediately connect students to the Department of Public Safety. In addition, every residence hall building requires a key or ID card to enter, and many have desk assistants on duty from 8pm through 7am.

Public Safety exists not only to protect, but also to educate the Tulane community. In conjunction with university and residence hall staff, Public Safety offers a number of valuable safety seminars to the Tulane community. They also offer an extensive array of shuttle services on campus and around town; these shuttle services are a free, convenient, and safe mode of transportation that provide students the opportunity to shop, see movies, and attend events off-campus. Tulane also has a Safe Rides program, an escort program, crime alert postings, self-defense classes and crime prevention orientation sessions.
